COOLSMILE Cools One Person on 5 Watts, No Refrigerant

BUSAN, South Korea - A South Korean manufacturer has built a personal cooling device that cools one person on 5 watts of power, producing air up to 31 degrees Fahrenheit below the surrounding temperature with no compressor and no refrigerant.

Air conditioning accounted for about 19% of the electricity used in U.S. homes in 2020, or 254 billion kilowatt-hours, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's most recent Residential Energy Consumption Survey. A room unit cools the whole volume of a space whether one person occupies it or six. Desk fans move surrounding air without lowering its temperature, and evaporative coolers push water vapor into the room.

Refrigerants add a second constraint. The American Innovation and Manufacturing Act directs the Environmental Protection Agency to cut U.S. hydrofluorocarbon production and consumption 85% by 2036.

COOLSMILE, made by Ecostar, takes its cooling capacity from a Reusable Cooling Core. The user freezes the core, inserts it into the device and points the outlet where the cooling is wanted. An aluminum heat transfer structure moves cold from the core into the passing air, and a fan directs it at the person. Nothing evaporates, so the device adds no humidity, and no sealed refrigerant loop can leak.

In controlled testing, COOLSMILE drew 5 watts during continuous operation and discharged air up to 31 degrees Fahrenheit (17 Celsius) below the surrounding temperature. Airflow at the outlet reached 12.7 mph (5.7 meters per second), and one frozen core delivered 2.5 hours of cooling. Ecostar reports energy use up to 99% below conventional room air conditioning.

Ecostar holds registered patents on the Cooling Core in South Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan. The product reached market through international crowdfunding campaigns and now sells through online channels and international distribution partners.
